What is Kickstarter
Kickstarter is one of the most well known Crowdfunding platforms in the world helping thousands of entrepreneurs and project makers realise their dreams every year.
Crowdfunding is a type of business funding that begins with a project. A project describes what a project creator is planning to do. In my case, that’s create a board game called Gay Sauna the Board Game. Once a project creator has an established project and idea, they can make this public on a crowdfunding platform such as Kickstarter and set a funding goal.
The general public are then given an opportunity to back the project and help it reach it’s funding goal. Kickstarter works on an All or Nothing basis. If a project does not reach its funding goal, then they receive nothing and the backers do not have to pay anything.
Backers are usually given a variety of rewards depending on the amount of money that they pledge to back the project, although backers can also pledge small amounts to support the project maker if they do not wish to spend a lot of money.
Once the project ends, assuming it has reached or exceeded it’s goal, the funds are sent from the backers to the project creator to make the project come to life. This can take some time as projects often have long processes that the funds are needed to execute on. For me that’s artwork and manufacturing.
If everything goes according to plan, the project creator finishes their project and the backers are all sent their rewards. While there is a risk that something could happen, it is not that common and most funded projects go on to fulfill their promises towards their backers. After all, they’ve received the funds they need.

Why am I using Kickstarter?
I am using Kickstarter to fund this project for two reasons. Firstly, Kickstarter is I think undoubtedly the best way for independent board game creators to receive the necessary funding and attention to launch successful board games in the current market. There is a whole sub-industry that has sprouted around Kickstarter for games, including a streamlined manufacturing and fulfilment process for smaller games producers, but also a huge community of board game creators sharing and discussing their experiences online. And with ever growing board game sales Internationally, it really is a great time to launch a board game on Kickstarter.
The second reason I am using Kickstarter or more generally Crowdfunding, is a lot more personal. My big career break during my University studies came when I joined Zopa.com, the World’s first online financial lending platform. Operating in the UK, we created a way for individuals to lend and borrow from each other using the same structured format of banking products. After this I went on to co-found BankToTheFuture.com, which was the World’s first crowdinvestment platform. Crowdinvestment can most simply be described as online Dragon’s Den / Shark Tank, where anyone in the public can contribute to the offer. My last stint in the Crowdfunding space was for Akvo.org, a non-profit software organisation where I built out the charity Crowdfunding platform as well as worked closely on the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) reporting standard for global aid distribution.
You could say crowdfunding is in my blood now and I’m so excited about the opportunity to now reach out to the crowd to help make my Gay Sauna the Board Game dreams come true!
